Pressure cookers have been marketed for decades as an easy way to cook delicious meals in a fraction of the time it would ordinarily take to cook foods via conventional methods. Modern pressure cookers are manufactured by a variety of companies, many of whom promise through print, online, and/or television advertisements that safety features prevent dangerous situations from occurring while cooking.

Despite the promises of manufacturers that their pressure cookers are safe to use, numerous lawsuits have been filed against many of these manufacturers, alleging that the safety features promoted in advertisements fail to prevent the lids from being removed while there is still pressure inside the cooking chamber. When this happens, extremely hot liquids in the cooker can explode and cause catastrophic injuries and burns to those nearby.

How a Pressure Cooker Works and Why They Can Be Dangerous

Pressure cookers have been around for over 300 years, but only in recent times has there been a focus on making these devices safe to use for home chefs. In general, pressure cookers consist of a cooking chamber with a lid that forms an airtight seal when properly closed. As the contents of the cooker are heated with the lid properly in place, the temperature within the cooker rises beyond the boiling point – in excess of 250 degrees Fahrenheit, in some cases.

Steam is produced, and this steam has direct contact with the food, which in turn cooks the food. Before the pressure cooker can be opened safely, the pressure within the cooking chamber needs to be safely released. Pressure cookers therefore have vents designed to allow pressure to safely escape from the cooking chamber. Today’s pressure cookers also have features that are supposed to allow steam and pressure to be quickly (yet safely) released in the event of an emergency.

Lawsuits filed against pressure cooker manufacturers allege (in part) that the safety features designed to keep the cooker sealed while there is still pressure in the chamber do not, in fact, prevent the lid from being prematurely opened.

What Happens When Pressure Cooker Safety Features Fail

It is extremely difficult, if not outright impossible, for home chefs and those who use defective pressure cookers to know if it is safe to open the lid to their pressure cooker after cooking. This is what has led to many of the injury accidents that are now the subject of pressure cooker injury lawsuits.
