As recently as December 2017, six people have been seriously hurt in injury incidents involving pressure cookers purchased from the supermarket chain, Aldi. All of the pressure cookers involved were purchased in Aldi locations in Australia, including in New South Wales, Southern and Western Australia, Victoria, and Queensland.
Details About the Australian Pressure Cooker Accidents
In each of the six injury incidents, the facts and circumstances bear a frightening similarity to other pressure cooker accidents that have been reported back here in the States, especially involving Tristar Products pressure cookers. The pressure cookers involved in these Australian incidents were sold under the Crofton Chef’s Collection brand. Although Aldi had initiated a voluntary recall of these pressure cookers over the potential danger of these cookers presented to consumers, only approximately one-quarter of all affected pressure cookers were returned.
The people injured in these six Australian incidents all suffered severe burns to areas of their bodies such as the face, torso, and arms when the lids to the pressure cookers suddenly and without warning exploded. In each incident, the contents of the pressure cooker (which were over 212 degrees Fahrenheit) were sent flying out of the cooker. In one instance, a victim standing approximately three feet away from the pressure cooker at the time it exploded.
All injury victims involved received second-degree burns to approximately 16 to 35 percent of their bodies, and third-degree burns to approximately 35 percent of their bodies. Both second- and third-degree burns are serious injuries that can result in permanent scarring and disfigurement. These and other injuries that can result from exploding pressure cooker-related injuries can have a lasting physical, mental, and emotional impact on the victim.
Consumers Deserve to be Informed About Dangerous Products
The fact that nearly 75 percent of all Crofton Chef’s Collection brand pressure cookers sold by Aldi with one or more potential defects remained unreturned even after the voluntary recall was initiated shows that these voluntary recalls are often insufficient to protect consumers. The burden for knowing whether the product they have is subject to a recall and taking action is placed on the consumer him- or herself. Oftentimes, though, the notices associated with these voluntary product recalls are not sufficient to alert affected consumers, explain the danger(s) of the affected product, and inform consumers of what they must do with their product.
