National Law Firm Representation for Power Pressure Cooker Explosions Resulting in Burn Injuries

Pressure cookers are heralded by manufacturers as an inexpensive and expedient way for people to quickly cook delicious, nutritious meals. When pressure cookers are not manufactured using quality materials, or if there is poor quality control in the manufacturing process, pressure cookers can reach consumers with one or more defects. A pressure cooker with a defect is a dangerous product: numerous individuals have been severely hurt by their pressure cookers.

Types of Pressure Cooker Accidents

Individuals have been hurt in pressure cooker accidents on account of:

  • Explosions and eruptions: The contents of a pressure cooker are placed under pressure during the cooking process. If the cooking compartment is suddenly depressurized (such as by quickly removing the lid), then the contents of the cooker can explode or erupt from the cooker, causing anyone nearby to be burned by exceptionally-hot food and/or liquids.
  • Electrocutions: Modern pressure cookers are electrical devices, and any time you run an electrical current near liquids you run the risk of a short-circuit that can lead to an electrocution. Electricity can cause second- and third-degree burns and may have adverse cardiac consequences for some individuals.
  • Burns and resulting infections: One of the most common injuries associated with defective pressure cookers are burns. Because of the scalding-hot temperature of foods and liquids in pressure cookers, when such foods and liquids make contact with skin, second- and third-degree burns can result. If these burns are not properly treated, infections can set in at the site of the burn and lead to further medical complications. Depending on the severity of burns, skin grafts or other medical procedures may be required. Scarring and disfigurement is almost always present in some degree. One young child who was burned when a pressure cooker exploded had burns so severe that her leg needed to be amputated.

Examples of Pressure Cooker Accidents

Some pressure cooker accidents that illustrate the variety and severity of injuries that can result from a pressure cooker explosion or electrocution include:

  • In January 2019, a 9-year-old child and his grandmother both suffered severe burn injuries after a pressure cooker exploded.
  • In October 2018, a young boy was severely burned when a “bubble” of hot liquid from a pressure cooker burst and splattered on him while he was holding onto his mother’s leg.
  • In June 2018, a young girl and her nanny were seriously burned after a pressure cooker exploded and sent boiling-hot liquids flying over the kitchen in which the girl was playing.
